Animation on Blu-ray

Funimation has released the first collection of Dragon Ball Z: Kai episodes on Blu-ray in on 2 discs. Ball Z Kai is light on story and heavy on ridiculous comedy and martial arts action with a Sci-Fi twist.

I never thought I’d say that Ralph Bakshi’s 1978 animated version of The Lord of the Rings was out on Blu-ray. The low-budget, stylized take on Tolkien’s classic novels is a classic on it’s own, but the Blu-ray suffers from a bad transfer.

Here is a short review of the new Toy Story Blu-ray/DVD Combo pack from Disney. While there isn’t much in the new bonus feature department, I still wouldn’t pass it up.

Wes Anderson’s first foray into animation (and hopefully not his last) is finally available on Blu-ray. The quirky, beautiful stop-motion film looks great in HD and is a must buy.

Disney has finally returned to traditional hand-drawn animation with The Princess and The Frog, and what a return it was. The film is an original take on a classic story filled with memorable characters and music. A must-buy.

Definitely not a movie for the animation-loving adult, Planet 51 is best suited to the little ones in your family. If they loved the movie, then you may be obligated to pick it up. Otherwise, I’d pass.

Hayao Miyazaki’s latest film is the first to receive the Blu-ray treatment here in the States, and Disney did it right. The great film combined with a surprising amount of bonus features makes this a must buy.

Crisis on Two Earths is the latest direct-to-video DC Universe film from Warner Premiere, and is an enjoyable, action-packed film that is as entertaining as Superman/Batman: Public Enemies.
